Wheel Gymnastics World Championships, Baar, Switzerland E-mail

2x Gold and 2 x Silver for Taunusstein's Gym Wheel elite. Julia Pohling won gold with the team, and silver in the all around competition and in spiral. Sarah Metz is the new Junior World Champion in vault.

Julia Pohling (Neuhof) could not quite repeat her sucesses from the past and "only" won the silver medal in the all around competition of the women's class. She showed three solid routines, however, a small uncertainty in her straight line routine cost her the title. In the end, Svenja Trepte from Hamburg, Germany, won the Gold medal, two tenth of a point ahead of Julia.
The spiral finals promised to be highly exiting, due to newly introduced regulations for counting difficulties. The athletes had to make a decision between an increased difficulty with inevitably more execution errors or less risky elements with less execution errors. Going for the high score for execution did not work out for Julia in this competition, and she placed second behind Kathrin Schad from the south of Germany, who performed more difficult moves. Julia finally celebrated Team Gold on friday evening, performing with the best of the best in front of a fantastic audience. This time, she showed a completely new move in spiral, which impressed the experts.
Kira Weise (Bleidenstadt) and Sarah Metz (Neuhof) both showed their best side during their first international appearance. After an impressive year of training during which both birls as well as Daniel Sternberger learned many new skills and switched from the young junior class to the older class, they kept their nerves in the World Cup. In the all-around competition, Sarah and Kira were among the top five in all three disciplines and placed 5th and 6th in the end. With an outstanding vault, Sarah qualified for the finals.
In the finals her hardest competitor came from Austria and showed a nice Auerbach-salto. However, Sarah convinced the judges with a piked salto with a half twist, that was clearly the best in the competition and she became the new Junior World Champion in this discipline.
Daniel Sternberger, also competing in this age group for the first time, was pleased to finish 5th in the all-around competition and 6th in the straight-line finals. An unfortunate mistake at the end of his straight line routine (he touched the floor with his hands after the dismount) cost him half a point and threw him back from position 3 to position 6.
For all four, this World Cup was, though nerve-wrecking at times, a great experience.
